Softball Suffers Losses in Doubleheader at Towson Friday

TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel University softball team (30-24-1, 9-11 CAA) fell in a Friday afternoon doubleheader to the Towson Tigers (26-25, 9-11 CAA) in the penultimate day of the regular season. The Tigers took game one, 11-4, before walking off in game two, 3-2.
GAME ONE / L, 11-4
Towson established balanced offensive attack in the first game. Drexel only managed two hits through the first four innings while the Tigers stormed out to a 6-0 advantage over that stretch.
Towson scored three runs in the first and one in each of the next three innings.
Drexel's Megan Trivelpiece notched a two-out RBI single to score Linda Rush in the first inning but could not find its next hit until Hayley Hulitt singled in the fourth before an inning-ending double play.
A three-run fifth inning helped the Dragons narrow the margin down to two, 6-4. In the eighth spot, Reilly Jo Swanson reached on a base hit. With two outs and the top of the order coming up, Drexel put together a rally to stay in the game. The next four batters reached as Elena Woulfe kept things going with a single. With runners on first and third, Rush hit a two-out RBI single to score Swanson. Kristi DiMeo walked to load the bases before Trivelpiece finished off the scoring with a clutch two-run base hit, 6-4.
Drexel held the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of fifth for the first time in the game. Drexel was then not able to keep the pressure up in the top of the sixth before Towson's five-run inning to put the game out of reach as the Tigers won by an 11-4 final.
Towson's Melissa Abrahamian (W, 7-6) throw a complete game effort, allowing nine hits, four earned runs and three walks with two strikeouts. Drexel's Brooklyn Daly only lasted 1.1 innings before being relieved by Meghan Conroy (L, 3-4) for the final 4.2 innings.
GAME TWO / L, 3-2
Runs were at a premium in game two.
Drexel went on the board first when Kristi DiMeo singled in Rush in the top of the fourth to put the Dragons up 1-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Tigers evened things up before taking the lead. It started with a solo home run from Nicole Stockinger before Towson then took the lead with an RBI single off the bat of Cassidy Meyer.
The Dragons were able to tie it back up at 2-2 in the sixth when Haley Hulitt notched an RBI single to bring home Rush.
But in the seventh, Towson walked off with the game-two win when Julia Smith-Harrington hit a solo home run, 3-2.
Drexel had four hits in the game from DiMeo, Hullit, Rush and Walker. Rush's and Walker's knocks both went for doubles.

The two teams finish off the series on Saturday, May 4 with a single game at 1 p.m.
CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 CAA Championship is set for May 8-10 in Harrisonburg, Va., hosted by James Madison University. The top five teams in the eight-team conference make the double-elimination tournament.
