TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel University softball team (30-25-1, 9-12 CAA) dropped the regular-season finale to the Towson Tigers (27-25, 10-11 CAA) on Saturday afternoon. Even with the loss, the Dragons have secured the No. 4 seed in the CAA Championships as DU makes it to the conference tournament for the first time since 2005.
In addition to Drexel making the CAA Championships for the first time in almost 15 years, Linda Rush became the first Dragon to hit 20 home runs in a season as she launched a solo shot in the top of the first inning to get things started on Saturday.
But that would come as the only run in the finale for DU as Towson took the lead in the third and held on for the win and get the three-game sweep.
Nicole Stockinger doubled with the bases loaded in the third for the Tigers to put them up 2-1 as two came around to score.
Towson then added an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI single to center off the bat of Riley Thies to score Chloe Poulich.
Elena Woulfe went 2-for-3 for Drexel with a single and a double. Sarah Clinton, Taylor M. Lee and Reilly Jo Swanson also notched base hits in the loss.
Devon Grippe (L, 9-10) took the loss in the complete game effort, striking out two with seven hits, three walks and three earned runs in 6.0 innings.
CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 CAA Championships are set for May 8-10 in Harrisonburg, Va., hosted by James Madison University. The top five teams in the eight-team conference make the double-elimination tournament. Drexel earned the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5-seeded College of Charleston on Wednesday, May 8 at 11 a.m.
