NORFOLK, Va. – The trio of ranked Dragons in Ebed Jarrell, Michael O'Malley and Bryan McLaughlin all had their arms raised in victory as Drexel Wrestling dropped a 25-11 dual at Old Dominion.
No. 18 Jarrell put the Dragons (6-9) on the board with an 8-0 major decision at 165 pounds. He logged three takedowns, one in each period, all while keeping Shane Jones off the scoresheet. Jarrell improves to 15-5 on the season and notched his 72nd-career victory. Ten of his 15 wins this season have rendered bonus points.
Michael O'Malley, the 31st-ranked grappler at 174 pounds, followed Jarrell with a major decision of his own, 10-2 against Alex Cramer. O'Malley stuck to form with a hot start and led 6-0 after the first period on a takedown and four near-fall points. The lead ballooned to 9-0 after the second period on an escape point and a second takedown.
O'Malley improved to 14-6 on the season. Monday's major decision was the 10th bonus-point victory of the year.
No. 32 Bryan McLaughlin tallied four total takedowns in a 10-6 decision against Tim Young. McLaughlin took down Young twice in the first period and led 4-1 after three minutes. Both grapplers picked up a point in the second, setting up a wild conclusion. Young escaped three times in the last two minutes, but McLaughlin added two more takedowns to ice his 14th win of the season.
The Dragons lost three weight classes by two points or fewer. Two of those three losses came on takedowns in the final five seconds.
Chase Shields and Shannon Hanna wrestled to a 1-1 deadlock late into the third period before Hanna pulled off the winning takedown in the closing seconds.
Parker Kropman nearly pulled off late-match heroics in a would-be top-10 upset of Sa'Derian Perry at 157 pounds. Kropman trailed 3-2 into the late phases of the match and eyed a winning takedown in a 50-50 scramble, but the redshirt-junior did not get the call.
The last bout of the night also went down to the final buzzer. Sean O'Malley found himself in a 1-1 tie with Jacob Bullock at heavyweight. With sudden victory beckoning, Bullock took down O'Malley near the edge of the mat in the closing seconds.
Drexel preps for a pair of dual matches on Saturday. The Dragons travel to No. 16 Princeton for a 2 p.m. showing prior to the Battle for the Cheesesteak Trophy against Penn inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
