NORFOLK, Va. – Kristi DiMeo and Linda Rush each hit a home run as the Dragons fell to Wagner on Friday, 11-10. With the loss, Drexel dropped to 1-5 while Wagner moved to 3-3. Due to inclement weather, the game between Drexel and Binghamton was postponed.
After a lengthy rain delay, the first game of the Pirate Invitational between Drexel and Wagner got underway, five hours after its initially scheduled time of 10 a.m.
Brooklyn Daly (0-3) started the game in the circle for the Dragons. She lasted 2.1 innings before being replaced by Devon Grippe. Daly would return in the bottom of the fifth to finish the game.
DiMeo went 2-for-2 and was responsible for half of the runs the Dragons scored. DiMeo hit a grand slam in her first at-bat and a sacrifice fly in the third to total five RBIs.
Rush hit her 50th career home run. She finished the day going 2-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons started their day by putting three runners on base. Savaanah Garcia singled, Elena Woulfe walked and Rush singled for DiMeo to hit the first home run of the season in grand fashion. Later, Hannah Walker doubled to right-center to bring home two runs. Drexel batted through the lineup to make the score 6-0.
In the bottom of the first, Wagner put a crooked number on the scoreboard with a two-run home run by Kaila Smith.
In the bottom of the third, Nora Conway doubled to left-center to advance Zoe Bender to third. The clean-up hitter, Bianca Worthy, then drove home the two runs off her single and advanced to second on an error. Two batters later, Worthy was driven home on an RBI single by Smith. After scoring five runs, the Dragons replaced Daly with Grippe and with runners on second and third who Daly was responsible for. Hannah Lewis doubled home two runs to give Wagner the lead 7-6 but quickly was turned into 9-6 with an RBI single by Penelope Russ and an RBI single by Bender. Lindsay Nelson came in relief for Grippe.
Woulfe brought home a run in the top of the fourth with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, DiMeo hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Garcia, and Megan Trivelpiece grounded out to shortstop to score Woulfe and tie the game back up at nine apiece.
Wagner picked up a run to retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Lewis singled down the left field line to score Smith.
In the bottom of the fifth, Daly returned to the game and pitched a clean inning, allowing no hits.
In the top of the sixth, Rush tied the game up at 10-10 with her 50th career home run.
The even game did not last long. The Seahawks took the lead for good with a single through the left side by Lewis making the score 11-10.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel will return to the diamond on Saturday to play a doubleheader against UMBC and Saint Peter's. The UMBC game will start the day out at 10 a.m. and Saint Peter's will follow around noon.
