HEMPSTEAD, NY – Two fourth quarter goals helped lead Drexel to a big 3-2 conference victory over Hofstra University on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons outshot the Pride 16-3 on the way to their second CAA win of the year. Drexel improves to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Both teams struggled to penetrate the opposing offensive zones in the first quarter as neither team took a shot before the seven-minute mark. The Dragons earned three penalty corners in a row with four minutes to play, but the Pride's defense held strong to keep the game scoreless through one.
Drexel outshot Hofstra 6-0 in the second quarter but couldn't find the go-ahead goal before the half.
Hofstra put the first points on the board at the 34:05 mark but Drexel answered back less than a minute later. Puk Thewessen fired into the zone on the Dragons fifth corner of the day and found Amber Brouwer for the deflection to tie the game at one. Drexel forced four penalty corner opportunities in the third quarter alone giving the Dragons the momentum they needed.
Drexel's offense caught fire in the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals from Tina Rawa and Eline Di Leva. Rawa's goal came on another deflection from Thewessen, giving the Dragons the first lead of the day. Di Leva opened the gap shortly after with a pass into the zone from Avery Powell, taking the Pride's goaltender one on one. The sophomore forward's sixth goal of the season proved even more valuable as the Pride sank a second goal with two minutes to play.
The Dragons defense held on long enough to secure the victory for a 1-1 conference split on the weekend. DU will return home on Friday, Oct. 15 for another CAA matchup with William and Mary at 4 p.m.
