DEDHAM, Ma. – Drexel field hockey picked up its first conference loss of the year in Friday's contest with Northeastern. The Huskies two early goals proved to be enough as Northeastern secured the 2-1 victory. With the loss, Drexel moves to 4-9 on the season and an even 1-1 in CAA play.
Northeastern pressured Drexel's goalie Megan Hadfield early forcing five big saves for the junior in the first 15 minutes. Hadfield's strength in cage helped keep the game scoreless through one as the Huskies outshot the Dragons 6-1.
Minutes into the second quarter, Northeastern forced its second penalty corner and was able to find a hole in the Dragons defense for the first score of the day. Drexel answered back by forcing three consecutive penalty corners with three minutes remaining, but Northeastern's defensive effort held strong.
Puk Thewessen tried to close the gap on the Dragons second penalty corner in the third but caught a deflection off the stick of the Huskies. Despite a scoreless first three quarters, Drexel's offense continued to push forward.
Hannah Nihill gave the Dragons their first goal of the day on an assist from Isabel Jacobs only 45 seconds into the fourth quarter, marking her fourth goal of the season. After a pair of untimely penalties, Drexel pulled Hadfield from the goal to try and gain an advantage on the Huskies but couldn't find enough power to keep them in the game.
The Dragons will play in their second CAA matchup this weekend on Sunday, Oct. 10 as they head to Hofstra for a 12 p.m. contest.
