Softball Sweeps Coppin State in Doubleheader to Open Season

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Drexel softball team (2-0) opened its spring season by sweeping the Coppin State Eagles (0-7) in a doubleheader. The Dragons won the first game, 11-1, and won the second game 12-1.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (1-0) pitched the first complete game of her collegiate career and held the Eagles to six hits and one run through five innings.
Linda Rush went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a solo home run. The Pittsburgh native also scored three runs for the Dragons.
Kristi DiMeo also batted in two runs for the Dragons. The senior went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored once.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened its season with a five-run first inning. After Taylor Kent walked, Sarah Clinton was able to reach on a fielder's choice. With Kent on second and Clinton on first, Rush hit a double to bring in a run and push Clinton to third. Megan Trivelpiece then reached on a fielding error and advanced to second. Rush and Clinton were able to score on the fielding mishap, making the score 3-0. Hannah Walker then doubled to left field to score Trivelpiece and give the Dragons a 4-0 lead over Coppin State. A Swanson RBI single brought home Walker and earned Drexel its fifth run of the inning.
In the second inning, Rush hit a solo home run, the 54th of her career, to give the Dragons a 6-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Dragons extended their lead to 10 runs. Kristi DiMeo singled to right field, and scoring on the play was Clinton. A batter later, Rush scored on a wild pitch. To cap off the inning, Holly Bridgman hit a sacrifice fly to score DiMeo and Swanson singled up the middle to score Trivelpiece.
DiMeo singled in the fifth inning to bring home Kent and give the Dragons an 11-0 lead.
The Eagles scored their only run in the fifth inning. Alexis Genovese singled to right field and scored Nia Bowe.
With the Dragons up 10, the game ended after five innings.
GAME TWO
Meghan Conroy (1-0) made her eighth career start in the circle. She held the Eagles to one run on four hits. Conroy also struck out four and only walked one batter in her five innings of work.
In the first start of her collegiate career, Grace Abbonizio went 2-for-4 and scored once for the Dragons. The freshman also had one steal.
DiMeo went 2-for-3 in game two with a double and three RBIs. The senior also crossed home plate twice.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragon's offense picked up where they left off in game one. In the first inning, the Dragons scored five runs. Abbonizio batted in the leadoff spot for the Dragons and hit a single; it was the first hit of her collegiate career. The freshman then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With Abbonizio on third, Clinton put the ball in play, and it was mishandled at third, allowing Abbonizio to score. A few batters later, DiMeo hit a single, plating two runs, making the score 3-0. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, Elena Woulfe hit a double to left-center to score the last two runs of the inning for the Dragons.
In the second inning, Drexel tacked on four more runs. Trivelpiece hit a double to score Rush, who was on second, and DiMeo, who was on first. A single by Walker up the middle scored Trivelpiece, and then Walker scored on an error in right field, making the game 9-0.
The Dragons scored once more in the third inning. DiMeo doubled down the left field line, and scoring on the play was Rush.
The bottom of the third is when Coppin State scored its lone run. A double off the bat of Genovese plated Brissa Alvarado, who was on second.
The Dragons tacked on their final two runs of the day in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Emma Dryden was hit by a pitch and was rewarded with an RBI. Rush grounded out to shortstop but scoring on the play was Woulfe.
With the Dragons up 11, the game ended after five innings.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will return to the Drexel Softball Field and host Coppin State tomorrow, March 14, in a double header. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
