PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (4-0) swept the Coppin State Eagles (0-9) in its second doubleheader this weekend. The Dragons took game one, 15-0, and won the second game 15-2.
GAME ONE
Brooklyn Daly (1-0) earned her first start of the season and did not let the opportunity go to waste. She pitched a complete-game shutout. Daly held the Eagles to three hits and fanned three batters.
Linda Rush went 2-for-3 for the Dragons. The grad student hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third and also hit an RBI single in the fourth.
Kristi DiMeo went 2-for-2 in game one and had four RBIs. The senior hit two home runs for the Dragons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel started its scoring barrage in the second inning. Hannah Walker led off for the Dragons and drew a walk. Grace Abbonizio pinch ran for Walker and stole second. With Abbonizio on second, Holly Bridgman put the ball in play and reached on a fielding error by the third basemen. The fielding miscue allowed Abbonizio to score the Dragons' first run. A few batters later, Elena Woulfe drove a ball over the centerfielder's head for an RBI double. Bridgman scored on the play.
DiMeo led off for the Dragons and hit a solo home run to deep centerfield in the third inning. A few batters later, Hannah Walker reached first base by beating out a potential double-play ball. Walker then took second base on a passed ball. Reilly Jo Swanson then singled to right-center and scored Walker. The Dragons' fifth run came with the bases loaded. Sarah Clinton was hit by a pitch to bring home Swanson. Following the hit-by-pitch, Rush launched a grand slam to center field. The Dragons were not finished scoring yet. DiMeo drew a walk and was immediately sent for a trip around the bases after Megan Trivelpiece hit a home run to right field.
The Dragons scored the rest of their runs in the fourth inning. First, Rush hit a single up the middle scoring Ashley Errico, who pinch-hit for Woulfe and recorded her first collegiate base hit. With Taylor Kent and Rush in scoring position, DiMeo hit her second home run to push the score to 15-0.
With the Dragons up 15, the game ended after the top of the fifth.
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (1-0) stepped into the circle for the first time this season and lasted four innings. Schable held the Eagles to two runs on four hits.
The first three spots in Drexel's lineup scored 10 runs for the Dragons.
The top four spots had a total of 13 of the 14 RBIs.
Savaanah Garcia started at second base for the Dragons and went 4-for-4 with a home run, the first of her career, and four RBI's.
Rush went 2-for-2 in game two. The Pittsburgh native hit two home runs and had six RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Abbonizio was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then was moved over by Garcia's single up the middle. A passed ball then gave Abbonizio and Garcia a free base. With runners on second and third, Rush hit a sacrifice fly to center field. It was deep enough to score Abbonizio to put the Dragons ahead, 1-0.
In the top of the second, Brissa Alvarado got Coppin State on the board with a solo home run to left field. The home run tied the game up at one.
In the bottom of the second, Garcia hit the first home run of her collegiate career. The three-run homerun blew the game open and gave Drexel a 4-1 lead. Rush immediately sent another ball over the fence for her third home run of the day.
In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded, Coppin State intentionally walked Rush. Coppin State's intention to get around the Drexel power hitter fell flat as it took a chance on DiMeo, who singled into right field and brought home two runs. Trivelpiece was the next Dragon to bring home a run. Trivelpiece was credited with an RBI after her at-bat ended with a dropped third strike. While the catcher threw the ball down to first to retire Trivelpiece, Rush took off from third and beat the return throw to home. Kent, who was on third, then scored on a wild pitch in the dirt to give the Dragons a 10-1 lead.
Alvarado struck again for Coppin State as she tripled to right field, beating the outstretched glove of Abbonizio and bringing home Marin Bernal to make it a 10-2 game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Drexel poured on five more runs. Abbonizio singled through the right side and advanced to second on the throw to third. Swanson, who reached on a fielding error earlier in the inning, scored on the play. Garcia then singled to left field to score Woulfe. To cap off the Dragons' opening weekend, Rush hit her second home run of the game, clearing the bases and tacking on three runs to give the Dragons a 15-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Meghan Conroy came into the game in relief for the Dragons and retired the Eagles in order.
With the Dragons up 13, the game ended after the top of the fifth.
