PRINCETON, N.J. – The Drexel softball team (25-10) split a doubleheader against the Princeton Tigers (1-2) Tuesday afternoon. The Dragons won the first game, 3-1, and dropped the second, 2-1. Drexel defeated Princeton for the first time since the 1992 season, halting a five-game win streak for Princeton.
GAME ONE
Jessica Schable started in the circle for the Dragons and pitched 4.2 innings, holding the Tigers to one run on six hits. Schable also struck two batters out.
Lindsay Nelson entered in relief to get the final out in the bottom of the fifth inning, and she did just that. Nelson produced a ground ball to get out of the inning with a runner stranded on second.
Meghan Conroy Also appeared to face one batter, and she, like Nelson, completed her job. The right-handed junior made the Princeton batter rollover on a pitch and groundout to shortstop.
Olivia Farris (5-4) completed the game for the Dragons and earned the victory. The freshman held Princeton off the hit column and only allowed two walks.
Hannah Walker went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the top of the second inning to score Drexel's first run.
Megan Trivelpiece pinch-hit in the seventh inning and hit a two-run single up the middle. The single broke a tie between the two teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Walker hit her RBI single in the top of the second inning to score Clinton from second. With her RBI, Walker moves into third place in the program's record book with 121 career RBIs.
Drexel held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning. With a runner on third, Princeton laid down a squeeze bunt. The Tigers executed the bunt play to perfection.
Trivelpiece entered the game as a pinch hitter with runners on second and third in the top of the seventh. With a 1-2 count, Trivelpiece hit a sharp line drive up the middle and brought home the two runners on base.
GAME TWO
Conroy (4-2) pitched one of the best games of her career. The junior went all six innings and allowed two runs on only two hits. The Tigers could not stop themselves from swinging early in the count, which allowed Conroy only to throw 62 pitches.
Kristi DiMeo went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Trivelpiece continued to be a threat in the batter's box in game two. She went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Trivelpiece also walked three times.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was purely a pitcher's duel until the fifth inning, when both teams scored. With bases loaded, Trivelpiece drew a walk and scored Grace Abbonizio from third to tally Drexel's only run of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Princeton doubled to left-center and scored two runs to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will wrap up the regular season at Towson this weekend. The two teams will meet and play a doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, and will meet for the final time on Sunday for a single game starting at 2 p.m.
The Dragons currently hold the first-place spot in the North Division of the CAA and will need to win at least two games against Towson to clinch the top spot in the north heading into tournament play.
