Softball Sweeps Towson in Doubleheader, Clinch CAA North Division Regular-Season Title

Towson, Md. – The Drexel softball team (27-10) are the CAA North Division regular-season champions after sweeping the Towson Tigers (14-16) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons took the first game of the doubleheader, 14-4. In the latter portion of the doubleheader, the Dragons won with a score of 10-2.
GAME ONE
Brooklyn Daly (9-1) started in the circle and went 5.1 innings. Daly held Towson to four runs on three hits. The senior is having one of her best seasons as a Dragon. She has an ERA of 2.52 and has thrown 75 innings this season.
Olivia Farris entered the game in relief and threw two-thirds of an inning. The freshman did not allow a hit and walked a batter.
Jessica Schable finished out the game for the Dragons by pitching an inning. Schable struck a batter out in the process.
With her solo home run in the fourth inning, Kristi DiMeo joins Linda Rush in one of the most prestigious clubs in the record book, the 200-hit club. DiMeo and Rush are now the only two Drexel players to have more than 200 hits in their career.
Sarah Clinton went 3-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored. The junior launched a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons started swinging the bats early. Drexel scored three runs in the top of the first to open the doubleheader. With runners on first and second, Reilly Jo Swanson doubled to center field to score Rush. Clinton then brought home DiMeo with an infield single. The Dragons earned their final run of the inning on a fielder's choice. Swanson scored Drexel's third run of the inning.
In the second, with the bases loaded, DiMeo drew an RBI walk. Clinton also walked and was credited with an RBI, making the game, 5-0.
In the top of the fourth, DiMeo hit a solo home run to put the Dragons ahead, 6-0. The home run was DiMeo's 200th hit of her career.
The Tigers pieced together a two-run inning in the bottom of the fourth before the game entered a lengthy weather delay.
Clinton hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to score Swanson and Backstrom. The home run is Clinton's third of the year.
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth after walking with the bases loaded and hitting an RBI ground out. At the end of the sixth, Drexel had a 9-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Drexel scored five runs. Clinton singled to right field, and DiMeo scored because of an error in right field. Holly Bridgman drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Swanson, and Hannah Walker hit a three-run double to center field to score Clinton, Trivelpiece and Bridgman.
GAME TWO
Farris (6-4) started in the circle for the Dragons in game two. The freshman went three innings, holding the Tigers to two runs on five hits.
Schable entered in relief and pitched the rest of the game. Schable went two innings and held Towson hitless.
Bridgman went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. The senior hit a double and drew an RBI walk in the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons started game two like they started game one, swinging the bats. The Dragons, in the first inning, scored five runs. Trivelpiece walked in a run to break open the game. Bridgman followed the walk with a single to center field, scoring Clinton and Swanson. With the bases loaded, Taylor Kent drew an RBI walk to score Trivelpiece. To cap off the inning, Elena Woulfe singled to left field and scored Bridgman.
In the top of the second, Tivelpiece singled to centerfield and scored two runs. DiMeo and Swanson scored on the play. Walker then grounded out to third base but was credited with an RBI as Clinton scored.
In the bottom of the second, Towson hit a pair of RBI singles to score two runs and trim the Drexel lead to 8-2.
In the top of the third, Clinton singled to left-center and scored Swanson from third. Bridgman then doubled to left and scored Clinton.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning and the Dragons in the lead 10-2, the game ended after five innings.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will return to the Tiger Softball Stadium on Sunday, May 9, to play the final game of the regular season. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
