PHILADELPHIA, Pa – The Drexel women's lacrosse team has produced a record breaking 2021 season amidst the chaos of the last year and the conference post season awards announced by the Colonial Athletic Association on Thursday morning only proved that. For the first time in program history, the Dragons received three major award winners including Mary Semanik head coach, Jill Batcheller for CAA Coach of the Year, senior midfielder Karson Harris for CAA Player of the Year and senior goalkeeper Zoe Bennett for CAA Goaltender of the Year.
In her third season with the Dragons, Batcheller has taken the women's lacrosse program from a four-win team to a top contender. She has amassed an impressive track record at Drexel, leading the team to a 12-1 record (.923) this season and a top-10 national ranking for the first time ever. With the honor, Batcheller becomes the first Drexel head women's lacrosse coach to receive the award.
After stamping her name in the Drexel record books, Harris received Player of the Year after an impressive run in the regular season. The senior midfielder, a Tewaaraton Award Top-25 nominee, broke the program record for most goals in a single season (55), reached the 100 career-goal mark and leads the league in goals per game (4.23), ground balls per game (2.54) and draw controls per game (5.54). She is also nationally ranked in three categories including goals per game (12th), free position goals per game (5th) and total goals (10th).
Bennett received CAA Goalkeeper of the Year after producing her strongest season yet. The senior faced 354 shots, recorded a .480 save percentage and 120 had total saves in 756:30 minutes in net for the Dragons. Her strongest performance this season came against Saint Joseph's where she recorded a career-high 16 saves. Bennett currently leads the CAA in saves per game (9.23) and ranks 17th in the country in save percentage.
In addition to the major awards, Drexel also set a program record with five athletes being named to the All-CAA First Team including Colleen Grady, Harris, Lucy Schneidereith, Rachel Warden and Bennett and had three athletes named to the All-Rookie Team including Corinne Bednarik, Belle McHugh and Cara Moreau. Bednarik also received All-CAA Second Team honors.
No. 1 seeded Drexel is set to compete in the CAA Tournament this weekend at James Madison University. The Dragons will play in the semifinals on Friday, May 7 at 4 p.m. against the winner of Towson vs. Elon.
