PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team is scheduled for another weekend on the road, set to face its first two EIWA opponents of the year. The Dragons will start in Providence, R.I. on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Brown Bears followed by a visit to Vestal, N.Y. to compete against the Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday at 5 p.m.
THE BATTLE OF THE BEAR (CATS)
This weekend will be the Dragons first of eight consecutive conference matchups between Jan. 14 and Feb. 13. DU didn't compete against either team in the regular season in 2020-21.
The last meeting between the Bearcats and the Dragons was in 2019-20 when Drexel took a dominant 28-9 victory from BU during their annual homecoming weekend. In their 17 meetings over the last two decades, the Bearcats hold a 5-12 advantage over the Dragons.
It's been a bit longer since Drexel and Brown have gone head-to-head. The last meeting between the two came in February of 2012 with the Dragons taking home a 23-13 victory. The Dragons and the Bears have met 15 times in the history of their rivalry with the Dragons taking the advantage, 9-6.
SCOUTING BROWN
Brown enters this weekend's competition with a 2-2 record and 1-0 in conference. After a pair of tough losses to Northern Illinois and Purdue to start the year, the Bears capped off their weekend at the Boilermaker duals with a dominant 42-0 shutout over Bellarmine. Brown tallied its second victory of the year in an EIWA matchup with Hofstra, outscoring the Pride 20-15.
The Bears lineup is headlined by Jack Bokina (12-5) and Blake Saito (10-7) at 149lbs and Timothy Levine (12-8) at 133lbs. The Bears have six wrestlers with conference victories under their belt including Hunter Adrian (125), Bokina (157), Nicky Cabanillas (133), Aj Pedro (174), Saito (149) and Harrison Trahan (165).
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats have amassed a 3-9 overall record and a 1-1 conference record. Despite a tough opening to their season, BU picked up two big wins at its home tournament against Edinboro and EIWA rival, Sacred Heart. The Bearcats met their second conference opponent to open the new year, dropping a 24-14 matchup with the reigning EIWA Champion, Lehigh. Saturday's matchup will also start Binghamton's seven match conference slate leading up to the tournament.
Binghamton continues to rely on their powerhouse 2x All-American and 2x EIWA Champion at 197lbs, Lou DePrez. The redshirt senior currently holds the teams best record at 18-3, joined by Anthony Sobotker (133), Nick Lombard (149), Brevin Cassella (165) and Jacob Nolan (174), all of whom have 10 or more wins this season.
