PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team defeated the Saint Joseph's Hawks on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in North Philadelphia. The Dragons (9-6) rallied behind the pitching performance of Meghan Conroy to defeat the Hawks (7-14), 6-2.
Conroy (2-1) started in the circle for Drexel and pitched a stellar five innings. Holding Saint Joseph's to one run on seven hits and fanning three batters. Conroy left 12 runners on base for the Hawks, including back-to-back bases-loaded jams in the second and third inning. Megan Kyte entered the game in relief and pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits. Kyte induced five ground ball outs out of the eight batters she faced.
Jackie Masone continued to hit the cover off the ball. The freshman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. Masone hit the third home run of the season.
Mia Garza went 1-for-2 at the plate and scored a run. The freshman was also disciplined at the plate, drawing two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons started the scoring early. Masone hit a solo home run to right field. Following Masone's round-tripper, DiMeo hit a double to left-center. With a runner on second, the Dragons drew two-straight walks to load the bases but could not score as the Hawks produced a ground ball to get out of the inning.
The Dragons tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to two. Abbonizio hit a ground ball past the diving shortstop with runners on first and second. Garza scored from second to extend the lead for Drexel. Sarah Clinton then singled to right field and loaded the bases for Masone. The Freshman shortstop pushed her at-bat to a full count and slapped the ball into right field to score Abbonizio and Megan Trivelpiece. Drexel held a 4-0 lead at the end of its frame.
In the sixth inning, Drexel used a sacrifice fly by Clinton to right field to score Abbonizio and give Drexel a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks took advantage of a passed ball and a ground ball in the infield to score their second run of the game.
Kylee Guerrera hit a single to right field in the top of the seventh. The Hawks bobbled the ball while fielding it, and Drexel capitalized on the error, scoring the lone run of the inning. Heading into the seventh inning, Drexel had a 6-2 lead.
