GAME ONE
Brooklyn Daly started in the circle for Drexel and went one and two-thirds of an inning. Meghan Conroy (2-2) entered the game in relief and pitched five and a third, holding the Cougars to two runs on four hits.
Ashley Errico went 4-for-4 in game one. The sophomore drove in three runs and scored twice herself. Errico was a double shy of completing the cycle. The Easton, Pa. native tallied a two-run triple in the seventh inning and hit the sixth home run of her season in the sixth inning.
Kristi DiMeo pieced together a quality performance after going 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The graduate student hit the first home run of her season in the third inning to plate two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons were the first to score in the contest. Mia Garza singled to right center in the top of the first inning to score Jackie Masone from third.
Charleston used a pair of singles, a fielder's choice, and a wild pitch to score five runs and take an early 5-1 lead in the second inning.
Drexel added two runs in the third inning after DiMeo hit her first home run of the day. The round-tripper scored Sarah Clinton.
The game fell quiet until the sixth inning. With Charleston holding a 5-3 lead, Drexel rallied to score three runs and take the lead for good. Errico hit a home run to left center. Later in the inning, Ameryn Humble singled to center field and scored Savaanah Garcia.
Drexel poured on six runs in the top of the seventh, making the game nearly unreachable for the Cougars. Humble reached on a fielding error, and Errico scored. Grace Abbonizio singled to right field later in the inning and scored Garza. The Dragons managed to flip the lineup over with runners in scoring position. Masone singled to right field and scored Abbonizio and Humble. Immediately after, DiMeo singled to right field and scored Clinton. After the RBI single, Errico picked up the two-run triple and ended the Dragons' barrage.
Charleston could only score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not nearly enough to cut into Drexel's lead.
GAME TWO
Lindsay Nelson (3-2) pieced together another solid outing, pitching a complete game and holding the Cougars to three runs on five hits. The junior also fanned three batters.
DiMeo went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two. The Turnersville, N.J. native tallied three RBIs and scored two runs.
Garza hit a perfect 2-for-2 in the latter half of the doubleheader against Charleston. The freshman picked up three RBIs and also scored two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The break in between games did not cool off the red-hot Drexel offense. The Dragons' bats scored five runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Garza drew a walk to score Drexel's first run of the game. Two batters later, Humble singled up the middle and scored two runs. Errico and DiMeo scored on the play. Immediately after Humble's single, Megan Trivelpiece also singled up the middle to score Garza. To end the inning, Humble scored on a wild pitch.
Garza singled through the left side in the second inning and scored Masone. Drexel had a 6-0 lead at the end of the second inning.
After Clinton singled through the right side, the Dragons scored another run in the third inning. Scoring on the play was Abbonizio.
The Cougars scored one run in the third after a double down the left line. Drexel had a 7-1 lead at the end of the third.
Drexel doubled its lead in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs. With runners on second and third, Abbonizio singled through the right side. The single scored Humble and Garza. After the Dragons flipped the lineup, Masone put the ball in play, and it was mishandled. The shortstop reached on the play, and Abbonizio scored. Following the fielding error, DiMeo launched her second home run of the day, scoring three runs. Capping the Dragon rally was Garza with a double to right center. Errico scored on the play.
Charleston cut into the lead by scoring two runs on a single and double in the fifth inning. However, that was not enough to keep the game from ending early, as Drexel was ahead 14-3 after five innings.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel returns to the Cougars' home field for a chance to complete the series sweep on Sunday, March 26. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Patriots Point.
