Dragons Win Overtime Thriller Against SDSU

Cissel's 14 Draws Ties Conference Single-Game Record
SAN DIEGO, Cali. – Maura Cissel's season-high 14 draw controls powered Drexel to an exciting 15-14 overtime victory against San Diego State University on Wednesday night at Aztec Lacrosse Field. Drexel secured its first overtime victory of the year behind the efforts of six different goal scorers and improves to a 5-4 record overall.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
First Quarter – Drexel 4, SDSU 4
SDSU scored early but it didn't take long for the Dragons to rebound. Grady kicked off the scoring for the Dragons with a free position goal, but the Aztecs answered back with two more. After winning six consecutive draw controls, a timely turnover by SDSU opened a scoring opportunity for Schneidereith. Drexel quickly changed the pace with a pair of goals from Harris and Grady, tying the score at four heading into the second.
Second Quarter – Drexel 7, SDSU 8
The Dragons came out hot in the second, scoring two quick goals by Harris and Drake for their first lead of the day. Drexel continued to command the draw taking a 14-3 advantage, however SDSU went on 4-0 run in the thick of the quarter to take back the lead. Grady closed out the half with her third goal of the day at the 1:10 mark, sending the Dragons into the half with a one-point deficit.
Third Quarter – Drexel 10, SDSU 11
Bednarik kicked off the third with an unassisted wrap-around goal, tying the game for the third time. Schneidereith opened the gap once more following a timely penalty call by the Aztecs. Drake became the Dragons fourth player with two or more goals in the sixth minute, giving DU the 10-8 advantage. In similar fashion, the Aztecs offense fired back with three straight goals for another one goal lead with fifteen to play.
Fourth Quarter – Drexel 14, SDSU 14
The Dragons tied the game for the sixth time in the opening minutes of the final period with a hat trick from Drake. Despite a goal from the Aztecs, DU opened the game back up with a pair of goals from Simpson and Drake. SDSU found its groove in the final minutes, finding two goals for a one-point lead. Harris stepped up when the Dragons needed her most, tying the game at 14 with seven seconds left, sending the game to OT.
Overtime – Drexel 15, SDSU 14
The Aztecs won alternate possession on the draw and stormed the Dragons zone, but Bennett came up with a big save. Harris and Grady fired away on the following possession and couldn't find a hole, but Simpson proved fourth times a charm, sinking the game winning goal with 11 seconds remaining.
