Four Dragons Advance To Day Two of EIWA Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dragons had a strong showing in the opening day of the 118th EIWA Tournament, amassing 30.5 points. Drexel will have four wrestlers advance to the final day of competition.
DU opened the day with a 4-6 record in the Round of 16. The Dragons saw big victories from Mickey O'Malley, Luke Nichter, Jaxon Maroney and Evan Barczak. Despite recording losses in the opening round, Jared Donahue and Eli Anthony picked up tech fall and fall victory respectively in consolation, giving the Dragons some late team points.
O'Malley improved to 2-0 on the day with a big win in the quarterfinals. With his advancement to the semifinals tomorrow, O'Malley only needs one win to secure an automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament.
The Dragons put up some good fights in the opening rounds of the second session but came up just short in several matches. Maroney, Nichter, Kropman, Barczak, McLaughlin and Anthony each competed in the second round of consolation to close out day one. Maroney kicked things off with an upset decision at 133lbs followed by a dominant performance by Barczak who nailed his first fall victory of the year over Blaine Bergey (Princeton). McLaughlin gave the Dragons their final win of the day in an upset decision over Navy to advance to day two.
