Drexel Tabs Two NCAA Qualifiers and Four EIWA Placewinners
ITHACA, N.Y. – Mickey O'Malley (174lbs) became Drexel's third-ever EIWA Champion on Sunday afternoon after competing to a 4-0 record. The Dragons had three other place winners, including Jaxon Maroney (7th), Evan Barczak (7th) and Bryan McLaughlin (6th). The Dragons finished 10th overall with 47 team points.
O'Malley and Barczak punched their tickets to the 2022 NCAA Tournament in Detroit, Michigan. The tournament will take place at the Little Caesars Arena from March 17-19.
The Dragons opened the day with tough losses at 133lbs and 165lbs. Barczak came close to a victory in the consolation round but fell in sudden victory on a last-minute takedown by Revano (Penn). Maroney and Barczak came back strong in the seventh-place matchup. Maroney stole a 7-5 sudden victory from Nicky Cabanillas (Brown) and Barczak dominating start to finish against Val Park (Navy). Maroney's podium finish is the first of his career.
O'Malley put up a perfect performance on the weekend, remaining undefeated through both days of competition. The redshirt-junior met a familiar opponent in Nick Incontrera (Penn) in the finals, powering his way to a tie-breaker two victory. He becomes the Dragons' first champion since Matt Cimato (2016) and is Drexel's first conference champion in the 174lb weight class.
Drexel capped off a successful weekend at 184lbs as Bryan McLaughlin battled back from a deficit on day one for a 6th place finish overall. The redshirt senior tallied a 3-3 record on the weekend for his third straight podium finish at the EIWA tournament.
