Softball Erases Seven-Run Deficit to Sweep Marist in Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team defeated the Marist Red Foxes in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field in Philadelphia. The Dragons (17-8) erased a seven-run deficit in the first game to win in the eighth inning, 12-11. The Dragons jumped out to a quick start in the second game and downed the Red Foxes (14-20), 9-6.
GAME ONE
Drexel erased a seven-run deficit and took the lead in the sixth inning of the game. Marist went on to tie the game and force extra innings, but Drexel prevailed and pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Jessica Schable started in the circle for the Dragons in game one. The right-hander tossed three and two-thirds. Lindsay Nelson (11-7) entered the game in relief and pitched the final four and a third.
Megan Trivelpiece went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in game one. One of those runs was the game-winning run off of Trivelpiece's single in the eighth inning.
Kristi DiMeo went 3-for-5 in game one, driving in two runs and scoring once herself.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Marist scored seven unanswered runs until the bottom of the fifth. Drexel pieced together a six-run inning to pull within one of the Red Foxes. Abbonizio scored on a wild pitch for Drexel's first run of the game. DiMeo hit an RBI single to right field to score Jackie Masone after that play. Later in the inning, the Dragons received a pair of singles from Mia Garza and Lily Meuninck that plated three runs.
Drexel took the lead with a Masone two-run home run to left field in the sixth inning. A few batters later, Humble hit a sacrifice fly to score DiMeo. Drexel had a 9-7 lead at the end of the sixth.
Marist hit a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh inning to tie the game at nine and force extra innings. The Red Foxes scored the ghost runner and added an insurance run in the eighth inning to lead 11-9, heading into the bottom of the extra frame.
The heart of Drexel's lineup was up, and it did not skip a beat. DiMeo singled up the middle to score Clinton, the ghost runner, from second. With the bases loaded, Ameryn Humble singled to left field to tie the game at 11. Trivelpiece delivered the final blow, singling over the head of the first basemen and scoring Ashley Errico.
GAME TWO
Brooklyn Daly (8-2) pitched a complete game, striking out five batters. After today, Daly is five strikeouts away from No. 200 in her career, putting her ninth all-time in the program record book.
Humble continued her hot hitting in the second game of the doubleheader. The sophomore went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Trivelpiece also showed up in game two. She went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel was patient to begin the second game. The Dragons drew a total of four times in the first inning and scored the first run of the game by way of a walk.
Marist scored on a close play at the plate to tie the game in the top of the second. But the game was not tied for long. Drexel scored four runs in the bottom of the second to extend its lead to 5-2. Masone hit a single up the middle to score Grace Abbonizio. Later in the inning, Humble stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the bags with a double to right center.
Both teams kept each other in check until the bottom of the fourth. Trivelpiece hit a sharp ground ball to third base and scored DiMeo. Following her, Garza hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field and scored Errico.
Marist tacked on two runs to pull within three of the Dragons in the top of the fifth. Drexel grabbed both runs back in the bottom sixth, Trivelpiece singled up the middle to score Errico, and Abbonizio Reached on a fielding error by the third basemen and scored Humble.
Marist scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to catch up to the Dragons.

The Dragons travel to Rider and take on the Broncs in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 2:30 p.m.
