Dragons Improve to 3-1 in CAA With Win Against Monmouth

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel raced out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back on its way to a convincing 67-35 win against Monmouth in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel (9-7) never trailed in the game and moved to 3-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The Dragons' defense, which entered the game ranked 24th in the nation in scoring defense, had another solid outing. Drexel held Monmouth (1-15, 0-3 CAA) to just 35 points and 27 percent shooting. The 35 points were the least points allowed since Zach Spiker took over the program seven years ago. It also marked the second time this year the Dragons allowed less than 40 points. Drexel is now 9-0 when holding its opponents to under 60 points.
Amari Williams led three Dragons in double figures with 13 points. He was 6-for-8 from the floor and had eight rebounds in just 17 minutes. Mate Okros had another good night from behind the arc. The senior made three 3-pointer and finished with 11 points. Luke House added 10 and also made three treys.
Williams scored on a 3-point play and a hook shot before the Hawks were able to get off a shot in the game. Drexel gradually kept increasing the lead and it grew to 17 after House drained a 3-pointer and was fouled. He made the free throw to put Drexel ahead, 28-11. Drexel went to the half ahead comfortably, 31-13. Eight different Drexel players scored in the first half, led by Mate Okros. The senior had eight of his 11 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Dragons shot 39 percent from the game and made 10 of their 29 3-point attempts. They controlled the glass, outrebounding the visitors by 12. Drexel had assists on 18 of their 24 field-goals (75 percent). Coletrane Washington and Justin Moore each had four.
Myles Foster led Monmouth with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Hawks had a tough night all around shooting wise. They were just 2-for-12 from deep and missed nine of their 16 free throw attempts.
The Dragons begin a two-game road swing on Thursday night on Long Island. Drexel will travel to Stony Brook for a 7 p.m. game that can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
