Bednarik and Harding Power Drexel to a 17-5 Triumph in the Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA– Grace Harding scored five goals in an offensive outburst as the Dragons defeated the Bearcats 17-5 in their season opener on Saturday afternoon from Vidas Field. A five-goal first quarter powered Drexel in the victory.
The Dragons outscored the Bearcats in all but one quarter and registered five different players with two or more goals on the day. Harding and Corinne Bednarik paved the way for DU each scoring five goals. Bednarik added four assists and finished the day with nine points. just one shy of her career-high and the school record for points in a game. Lindsey Dean, Hayleigh Simpson, and Bridget Finley each tallied two goals of their own. Additionally, Saundra Godshall found the back of the net in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER – Drexel 5, Binghamton 1
The Dragons scored first as Harding scored two goals within the first five minutes of the game. A score by Bednarik extended the lead to 3-0 in the eighth minute. The defense held BU to one goal on four shots in the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER – Drexel 8, Binghamton 1
DU kept its momentum going from the end of the first quarter as it scored three more goals in the second. Cuocco picked up two big saves before the half.
THIRD QUARTER – Drexel 15, Binghamton 3
Finley scored on a free-position shot thirty seconds into the second half. The offense continued to overpower the Binghamton defense as they scored seven goals in the quarter. BU found the back of the net twice.
FOURTH QUARTER – Drexel 17, Binghamton 5
The Bearcats offense scored two goals to open up the fourth quarter. Drexel fired back with goals by Bednarik and Finley to close out the game.

The Dragons travel to Staten Island, N.Y. on Wednesday, February 15 for a non-conference matchup against Wagner. The opening draw is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
