Drexel's Defense Holds SDSU Scoreless for 50 Minutes in a 9-5 Victory

PHILADELPHIA – The Dragon's defense shined as they held San Diego State scoreless for over fifty minutes in a 9-5 victory over the Aztecs on Tuesday afternoon. The team picked up their third win when allowing five goals or fewer. Drexel enters the last month of the regular season at 7-3 and 6-1 at Vidas Field.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Leading the offense, were captains Corinne Bednarik and Hayleigh Simpson, who scored hat tricks.
- Jenika Cuocco compiled an 77% save percentage and turned away a career-high 17 shots in goal.
- DU held the advantage in the circle and won 12 of 18 draw controls.
- The Dragons were almost perfect on defensive clears going 17 for 18.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aztecs scored three times in the opening four minutes of the contest. After a Drexel timeout, Bednarik found the first goal for the Dragons at 10:34. This started an offensive run as Simpson, Grace Harding, and Saundra Godshall tallied. DU claimed a 4-3 advantage into the second quarter.
- Both teams held their opponent scoreless in the second quarter. Cuocco ended the first half with 11 saves.
- Godshall found her seventh goal of the season in the second minute of the second half. Simpson and Bednarik were successful late in the quarter to extend Drexel's lead to four goals. The Dragons held San Diego State to four shots in the timeframe.
- In the final quarter, Simpson earned her 22nd goal on a player-down opportunity. DU's streak of eight unanswered goals concluded as SDSU was successful in the tenth minute of the final period. Drexel and San Diego State each scored to end the contest.
