Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader against Fordham on Wednesday afternoon in Bronx, N.Y. The Dragons fell in game one, 3-1, but surged back in game two and defeated the Rams, 9-1.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson started game one in the circle for Drexel and pitched 5.2 innings. Holly Spletzer (0-1) entered the game in the third inning but only got through one batter, allowing three runs. Nelson reentered the game in the third and pitched out of a jam. The senior finished the game with six strikeouts and held Fordham to five hits.
Devyn Demchak went 2-for-3 with a pair singles in game one. Mia Garza, Savaanah Garcia and Lily Meuninck all checked in with a hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fordham scored its three runs in the bottom of the third. The team scored its first first run on a fielding mishap and a double down the left field line.
In the fifth, Drexel checked in with a sacrifice fly by Kylee Guerrera. The fly ball scored Mia Garza.
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (4-4) started game two and went all seven innings, holding Fordham to just six hits and one run. The senior also fanned two batters.
Three Dragons had multi-hit games in the second game. Lana Mooney led the team going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ameryn Humble went 1-for-4, also dring in two RBIs and scoring two runs. Meuninck went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened the game up in the third inning quickly piling on runs. Humble roped a double to left center and scored Lana Mooney. Two batters later, Meuninck hit a single to left field and scored Humble on the play.
In the foruth inning, Mooney hit an RBI single to right center and scored Guerrera. An inning later, Guerrera doubled to left center and scored Ashley Errico on the play. With Drexel up 4-0, Fordham finally broke onto the scoreboard with a single through the left side that only scored one.
Drexel went on to tack on five more runs. In the sixth, Meuninck hit a sacrifice fly to right field and scored Mooney. A batter later, Garza hit a single down the right field line to score Humble.
In the seventh inning, Drexel scored three runs. Mooney hit a single to left field and scored Guerrera. Humble then grounded out to shortstop but in the process, Grace Abbonizio scored. To cap off Drexel's scoring parade, Errico reached on a dropped fly ball to right field. Scoring on the play was Mia Garza.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel returns to conference play on Saturday, April 1. The Dragons will travel to Towson, Md. to face the Tigers in a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon. On Sunday the Dragons and Tigers will meet once more to finish the series, starting at 1 p.m.
