Dragons Split on Day One of Red Storm Classic

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader on the first day of the Red Storm Classic, hosted by St. John's. The Dragons fell to the hosts 4-0 in the day's first game and then defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 6-2.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (1-5) pitched all six innings of the game and struck out two Red Storm players.
Izzy Alamillo had three of the Dragons' five hits. The sophomore went 3-for-4 in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. John's scored three runs in the fourth inning. A single to centerfield scored two runs and then a double to right field brought in the final run of the inning. In the sixth inning, the Red Storm hit an RBI single to right field to extend their lead to 4-0.
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (1-5) picked up the first victory of her season. The senior threw a complete game, holding the Bobcats to six hits and two runs. Schable also struck out three batters.
Mia Garza went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Lana Mooney went 1-for-3 with a two-RBI single to left field in the fourth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel struck first. Ashley Errico hit a single to right field and scored Alamillo. With the Dragons up one, Quinnipiac scored two runs in the top of the second and the top of the fourth.
The Dragons did not stay down for long. Drexel took advantage of an error by the first basemen. Devyn Demchak reached on the E3 and scored Errico. Alamillo grounded out to second base and scored Demchak. To cap off the scoring parade, Mooney hit a single to left field and scored Madison Gayle and the speedy Grace Abbonizio.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons return to Queens, N.Y. on Sunday, March 5 to partake in the second day of the Red Storm Classic. Drexel will begin its day at 9:30 a.m. facing the hosts and will play Quinnipiac at noon.
