Drexel is now 3-0 in CAA play for the first time since 2013
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Luke Tomak scored four times and Ross Blumenthal made 15 saves as Drexel opened up a big lead and held on for a 15-11 win at Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons improved to 6-3 on the season and are now 3-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play for the first time since 2013.
Drexel led by as many as six goals after a big second quarter gave the Dragons the lead. It was 4-3 late in the first quarter before Sean Donnelly tied it up when he came out from behind the cage and fired home a left handed shot. That goal started a 7-0 run which gave Drexel a 10-4 lead. Donnelly and Tomak each had two goals during that stretch, while Jack Joyner, Max Semple and Casey Waller also had scores in the span. The Dragons held the high-powered offense of the Stags off the board for a span of 11:47 before Jack McKenna closed the first half scoring with five minutes to play in the second. Drexel had possession for the majority of the first half as Justin Joseph won six straight draws to start the second quarter.
The game got much tighter in the second half as Fairfield (3-7, 1-2) chipped away at Drexel's lead as the time of possession switched in favor of the home team. Brennan Greenwald scored his second goal of the year and Tomak added another for DU in the third, but when Bryce Ford scored in the final minutes of the third, the Stags were down by just four. Fairfield then scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter as Drexel's lead dwindled to just one at 12-11 with 8:08 to play. The run was snapped less than a minute laster as the Dragons answered by closing the game with three consecutive goals to pick up their second road CAA win of the season. Max Semple gave the Dragons a two-goal lead when he picked up a rebound in traffic in front of the cage and fired home a shot on his way to the ground to make it 13-11. Less than 20 seconds later, the Dragons won a loose ball near midfield and Conor Hooley raced towards the Fairfield net. The freshman found Donnelly in close and the junior scored his third of the game making it 14-11 at the 6:50 mark. The Dragons added an insurance goal when Holley scored 38 seconds later for his second of the day, putting DU ahead, 15-11.
Blumenthal had another solid performance in the cage. The senior turned aside 15 shots, including 10 in the second half. Tomak had an assist to go along with his four goals and tied his career-high with five points. Hooley had a big day with his fourth multiple-goal game to go along with two assists. The four points were a career-high. Donnelly and Semple each had hat tricks for the Dragons. Joseph won 19 of his 30 face-off attempts and scooped up 13 ground balls.
Will Snyder made 12 stops for the Stags. Jack McKenna and Bryce Ford each had three goals and an assist. Fairfield outshot the Dragons, 46-42, but Drexel had 11 more ground balls in the game.
The Dragons return to action on Saturday when they face Stony Brook at Vidas Field at 2 p.m. It will be Stony Brook's first visit as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.
