Men's Swimming and Diving Downed by Towson 162-138 in Senior Day Meet

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's swimming and diving team was upended by Towson on Saturday by a score of 162-138 in Drexel's senior day meet. With the loss, the Dragons fell to 2-3 in dual meets on the season while Towson improved their record to 6-1.
The Dragons placed first in the 400 free relay as Alessio Gianni, Andrea Casini, Colton Wade, and Sebastian Smith teamed up and set a new pool record for a time of 3:00.93. The time paced the old record, set in 1986, by just over three seconds.
Kaan Akdag had two first-place finishes as he hit the wall first in the 500 and 1000 free, recording times of 4:37.56 and 9:41.05 in each. Sebastian Smith also had a pair of first place finishes, hitting the wall first in the 50 and 100 free with times of 20.31 and 44.58 respectively. Smith's time in the 50 free was the fastest time in the CAA this month. These performances established new pool records at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. His 50 free time surpassed a record that had stood since 1993, while his 100 free time broke a record previously set in 2018.
Dimi Gkelis placed first in the 100-back, finishing with a time of 49.51. Alessio Gianni clinched first in the 200 fly, recording a time of 1:51.09. Lastly, Andrea Casini secured first in the 200 free as he hit the wall with a time of 1:41.84.
Meanwhile, on the diving board, Jack Patton finished second on both the one-meter and three-meter boards, recording scores of 257.63 and 249.75 on each.
Up next, the Dragons gear up for the CAA Championships. The three-day event starts on Feb. 27 from Hampton, Va.
