Dragons Fall Just Short of Comeback against No. 14 Penn, 11-8 at Franklin Field

PHILADELPHIA - After trailing 8-3 at halftime, the Drexel Dragons fell just short of making a comeback victory against No. 14 ranked Penn, 11-8. Thanks to hat tricks by Alex Wall and Corinne Bednarik, the Dragons pulled the lead to within two before a late goal sealed the deal for the Quakers. The Dragons fall to 2-1 while Penn wins to go to 1-0 on the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jenika Cuocco had 15 saves including 10 in the second half while allowing only two goals in the final two quarters
- Bednarik accounted for six total points
- Cuocco collected a career-high seven ground balls
- Dragons outscored the Quakers 5-3 in the second half
- Penn got off to a quick start at the beginning of the first quarter. Niki Miles, the Quakers leading scorer from a year ago got things started with the first goal. Miles would score again for UPenn to go up 3-0. Wall would score for the Dragons late with just 0:06 left on the clock to bring the Dragons in closer 3-1.

After a Drexel green card, UPenn capitalized to add to the lead, 4-1 in the second quarter. Paige Lipman quickly secured a goal after an over-the-net pass from Erika Chung. Drexel then fired back after a penalty by Penn. Wall scored on the free-position opportunity to draw Drexel in closer, 5-2. The Quakers scored three of the next four goals to go into halftime up 8-3.

The third quarter saw a strong defensive battle between both teams. Cuocco held strong for the Dragons in front of the net with seven saves in the quarter alone. Kaitlyn Cumiskey eventually broke through to add to the lead. The Dragons bounced right back with a goal of their own. Wall scored her third of the contest to cut the lead to 9-4.
- After the Quakers started the quarter with a tally, the Dragons' offense started to come alive. Drexel went on a 4-0 run, including three straight from Bednarik to cut the lead down to just two. Catherine Berkery closed the game out from the Quakers, hitting the back of the net late in the quarter for the 11-8 win.

Drexel travels to College Park to take on the No. 9 Maryland Terps on Wednesday, February 21. Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
