Dragons Upended on First Day of Sprio Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Drexel softball team was defeated in both games of the UNC Greensboro Spiro Classic on Friday afternoon. The Dragons dropped the first game to Ohio, 4-3. Then fell to the hosts, 7-2.

GAME ONE
Natalie Alldred started the game and went four innings, holding Ohio to just three hits and one run. Allison Hoppe (0-3) entered the game in relief and went 2.1 innings. The freshman allowed three runs on five hits.

Mia Garza went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Devyn Demchak and Lindsey Hunt joined Garza by also going 2-for-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Garza hit an infield single in the first inning to give Drexel its first lead of the game. Kalea Calugay scored on the play.

In the bottom of the second, Ohio tied the game at one. But it did not last. Drexel tacked on two runs in the fourth inning to take a two-run lead. Ashley Errirco singled to left center and scored Hunt. Alamillo helped Drexel extend its lead with a single through the left side. Annabelle Smink scored on the play.

Ohio scored three unanswered runs in the fifth and seventh innings to defeat the Dragons.

GAME TWO
Lindsay Nelson (0-4) started the second game of the day and went three innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Hoppe entered the game in relief and went two innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Alldred finished the game by pitching a hitless inning.

Hunt went 3-for-3 with a double in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG scored a pair of runs in the second inning. A solo home run and a single to left center put the tournament hosts on top.

In the third, Garza hit a single up the middle and scored Alamillo on the play. UNCG continued by scoring five more runs to extends its lead to 7-1.

In the seventh, Garza hit a single to center to score Abbonizio and chip away at the UNCG lead, but it was not enough as the Spartans secured the victory.

Drexel returns to UNC Greensboro on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. The Dragons will face UNC Greensboro to begin the day, then will take on Sacred Heart at 5:30 p.m.
