Drexel Clinches Spot in CAA Tournament With Overtime Win over Towson, 9-8

TOWSON, Md. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team topped Towson, 9-8, thanks to a game winner from Corinne Bednarik in overtime. The fifth year had a four goal performance and added an assist for her seventh straight hat trick. Jenika Cuocco collected 16 saves, two of which came in overtime.
The Dragons clinched a spot to the CAA Championships for the fourth year in a row. The Dragons improve to 10-3 and stay a perfect 5-0 in the conference as Towson falls to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Tigers got on the board first thanks to Katie Roszko, who broke free from the defender and scored just in front of the crease to give Towson the early lead. After the Dragons received a yellow card, the Drexel defense held strong and regained possession. DU paused until both teams were even, and quickly went on the attack with Alex Wall drilling the back of the net to tie things back up at one apiece.
Bednarik tallied for the first time in the opening frame, racing around the Tiger defender and battled through contact to give DU the lead, 2-1. After Towson answered with a goal of its own, Alex Wall added her second goal of the quarter. Bednarik darted the pass over the back of the net for Wall to bury it through the net. TU was able to score with a player down to end the quarter tied at three.
DU started the second quarter with a tally from Molly Weygand. Maddie Fowler dished it through the needle to Weygand who shot it past the Towson goalie. Bednarik scored another for the Dragons, as the Glenmoore, Pa. native darted around the net to tally and extend the lead, 5-3.
Cuocco had four huge saves for Drexel in the second quarter, keeping the Tigers scoreless for 15 minutes. The final coming with 1:20 left that the Dragons were able to capitalize on. With just 17 seconds left on the clock, freshman Bea Buckley fired a shot that bounced off the goalie and in to give DU the 6-3 lead heading into the half.
Towson was able to keep Drexel scoreless for almost 20 minutes as the Tigers scored five straight goals. Milana Zizakovic added three tallies as TU took a commanding 8-6 lead. The Dragons were finally able to break the scoreless streak in the fourth quarter as Bednarik scored off the free-position shot to cut the lead to one. Allison Drake tied the game up at eight, burying it from the far post with 4:35 remaining.
In overtime, Cuocco came up clutch again. The sophomore collected two huge saves to keep the Dragons alive deep into the first three minutes of the first overtime. With 25 seconds left, Bednarik wrapped around the back of the net and slammed the bottom of the cage to edge out the victory over the Tigers, 9-8.

The Dragons head into a battle against fellow undefeated CAA foe, No. 14 Stony Brook on Sunday, April 14 in Philadelphia. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. at Vidas Field on Youth Day, following the contest, the Dragons will be signing postgame autographs .
