PHILADELPHIA— Grace Abbonizio's throw from centerfield in the top of the seventh inning clinched a 2-1 victory for the Drexel softball team against the UNCW Seahawks on Friday afternoon.
UNCW hit a single in the top of the seventh inning with two outs that seemingly tied the game at two. But a perfect throw by Abbonizio was caught by the Drexel catcher, Lindsey Hunt, on a hop. The catcher, who had caught the ball a few feet up the line braced herself for the tag and collided with the runner, holding onto the ball for the final out of the game.
Lindsay Nelson (8-12) pitched a complete game for the Dragons, allowing one run on seven hits. Nelson also fanned three batters.
The Dragons struck first in the bottom of the fourth. After Abbonizio hit a double to left center, she stole third with just one out. Kalea Calugay hit a bouncer over the pitcher's head and was thrown out at first, but Abbonizio scored on the play.
In the top of the sixth, an awkward popup fell in front of first base and UNCW took advantage of the misplay to take an extra base and tie the game at one. But the score did not stay tied for long, Abbonizio's day was not over. The senior got a piece of a pitch located up and away and sent it over the wall in centerfield to give Drexel the lead.
Drexel and UNCW return to the DU Softball Field on Saturday at noon to play game two of the series.
