PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team defeated the Towson Tigers in the series-opener, 10-2 on Friday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field.
Lindsay Nelson (5-9) threw 140 pitches and held the Tigers to two runs on four hits during the performance. Nelson also fanned four batters and kept Towson off the base paths, only allowing four walks.
The Dragons picked up 11 hits and only struck out twice and left four runners on base in the first game of the series.
Ashley Errico hit a three-run home run to help Drexel mercy rule the Tigers. Kalea Calugay and Mia Garza each pieced together a two-hit day. Calugay scored twice and also drove in two runs.
In the first inning, Garza helped Drexel strike the iron first. A groundout by the Acres Homes, Texas native drove Grace Abbonizio across home plate. Towson hit a solo homerun in the third to tie the game at one, but that did not hold long.
Drexel received a bases-clearing double from Annabelle Smink to take a 4-1 lead. Two batters later, Smink scored on a Izzy Alamillo single.
In the fifth inning, Towson loaded the bases with no outs and only scored one run on a bases-loaded walk. But that is all the Tigers could get, as Nelson worked herself out of the jam.
The Dragons extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Errico hit the third home run of the season. At the end of the fifth, Drexel led Towson, 8-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Drexel received a two-run double to right center to end the game early due to the mercy rule.
Drexel and Towson return to Drexel on Saturday to play the second game of the series. First pitch from the Drexel Softball Field is slated for 3 p.m.
