PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team suffered an extra-inning defeat to the Towson Tigers on Saturday afternoon, 6-3.
Allison Hoppe went seven innings, holding the Tigers to three runs on six hits. Natalie Alldred (2-2) entered the game in the eighth inning and surrendered a three-run home run.
Kalea Calugay and Lindsey Hunt each recorded two hits and hit a home run for the Dragons.
The Dragons jumped out to an early start in the first inning. After Abbonizio was able to reach safely to lead off the game, Calugay smashed a ball to left-center to push across the first two runs of the game.
In the top of the second, Towson used a sacrifice fly to pull within one of the Dragons. But that deficit did not hold for long. Drexel widened the gap in the bottom of the second as Hunt hit a solo home run to right field.
The game turned into a defensive battle until the fifth inning, when the Tigers hit a two-run home run to tie the game at three.
After the game went into extra innings, Drexel was one out away from getting out of the top of the eighth, but a three-run blast to centerfield lifted Towson over the Dragons.
Drexel and Towson return to the Drexel Softball Field on Sunday to play the rubber match. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
