PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team defeated the Towson Tigers, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon to take the season series. The Dragons improved their record to 12-7 overall and a 7-7 record in conference play. Towson dropped to 14-23 overall and a 5-10 record in the CAA.
Lindsay Nelson (6-9) threw one of the best games of her season. The senior went the distance and only allowed five hits. The Old Bridge, N.J. native also fanned six batters in the effort.
Jackie Masone paced the Dragons in the hits column, going 2-for-3 with a home run in the sixth inning. Her home run was on the backend of back-to-back home runs.
Drexel jumped out to a quick lead after capitalizing on Towson's defensive miscues in the first inning. Kalea Calugauy hit a single up the middle and advanced after the ball bounced away from the catcher. Scoring on the play was Abbonizio and Alamillo. Later in the inning, Lily Meuninck hit a sacrifice fly to right field and scored Calugay to push Drexel's lead to four.
In the third inning, Drexel extended its lead after Meuninck reached on a fielding error. On the play, Mia Garza scored.
The game was quiet until the bottom of the Drexel lineup added two quick and easy tallies. Ashley Errico, the No. 8 hitter, mashed the fourth home run of the season. A batter later, Masone took a ball down the left field line for her second home run of the season.
Drexel returns to action on April 10 against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. First pitch from Vidas is set for 3 p.m.
