Bea Buckley Collects Career-High Four Assists
PHILADELPHIA - Bea Buckley collected five points, including a career-high four assists as the Drexel women's lacrosse team fell short to No. 12 Penn on a rainy day in Philadelphia. Allison Drake and Anna Maria Gragnani each earned four goals Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. The Dragons move to 1-2 on the season, with both defeats coming to ranked opponents.
DU struck first in the opening period. Kate Marono circled around the horn and dished it for Gragani for the first points of the day. The Quakers responded with two tallies of their own from Anna Brandt and Paige Lipman. A free position goal from Allison Drake tied things back up at two apiece after one
Both teams traded goals in the second before Penn took control of the lead, getting home with back-to-back scores for the 5-3 advantage. Drexel cut the deficit to one after Bridget Finley tallied on the free position shot. Keeley Block would extend the lead back to two at the 4:16 mark after firing a shot around the Drexel defender.
Penn opened the second with two more goals coming from Catherine Berkery and Block. The Dragons came roaring back, as Buckley found Gragnani for the score. Just over a minute later, Drake scored her fourth tally of the game after the Quaker penalty. Nearly 30 seconds later, Erika Chung dished it to Berkery, who dumped it over her shoulder to reach the cage. Block added another, hitting the bottom of the net just in front of the circle. Buckley assisted goals for both Gragnani and Finley as Drexel found themselves down just 11-8 heading to the fourth.
Berkery scored at the 13:33 mark to begin the fourth. She fought through traffic to get the tough grab and put it away to extend the lead to four. The Dragons responded quickly, with Gragnani tallied a minute later off another free position attempt. Both teams scored a pair of goals before Penn got through to score again with nearly a minute left to give Penn the win, 15-11.
Emma Nikolic and Katie Maloney each caused a pair of turnovers. Jenika Cuocco finished with six saves for the Dragons. Drake tied a career-high with three ground balls.
