UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Bridget Finley scored five times as the Drexel women's lacrosse team roared past Penn State Wednesday afternoon. This is the second consecutive season the Dragons (3-2) have taken down the Nittany Lions, and their first win in Happy Valley. Jenika Cuocco had seven saves and allowed just four goals before the fourth quarter.
The Dragons got off to a 5-1 start in the opening quarter. Anna Maria Gragnani broke through the middle of the Penn State defender to hit the back of the net, getting the Dragons on the board first. PSU responded to tie things up at one, with Erika Ho scoring her first of five goals on the night.
The Dragons scored four straight to end the first, including three straight from Finley. Off the free-position shot, Finley was able to fight through the scrum to get the rebound and get her first tally. Bea Buckley found Finley less than a minute later for another score. Buckley had five assists in the contest. Finley was able to get home again to collect the first quarter hat trick. The Downingtown, Pa. native hit top net at the eight meter mark for the goal. Graganani picked up a hat trick of her own at the buzzer. Buckley found Gragnani from behind the net, who got through traffic to fire the shot through.
Penn State opened the second with a score, as Emma Kelly tallied on the free-position. The Dragons came back to score three straight, with Gragnani, Ellie Wall and Kate Marano all adding a goal. Erika Ho capitalized off another free-position opportunity to cut the deficit down to 8-3 at the half.
Finley started the Dragons off hot to begin the second half. She raced around the net and took it herself for her fourth goal of the game. After a Drexel position, Ho took it coast-to-coast for the score, bringing Penn State to within five. Bea Buckley earned her fifth assist, as she found Finley again right in front of the cage for the goal. Caroline Senich went coast-to-coast herself, scoring her first goal of the season. She then went back-to-back just over a minute later, tallied off the free-position shot. Teagan Quinn came off the bench to collect her second goal of her career, giving the Dragons a 13-4 lead after three.
Gragnani recorded her fourth score of the game to open the final 15 minutes. The redshirt senior spun around her defender and faked right to earn the goal. The Nittany Lions made a late charge in the final 11 minutes, scoring five straight. Ho scored a pair in that span, but it was not enough as Drexel took the win in Katie O'Donnell's homecoming back in State College.
