PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team erased an early four-run deficit by scoring six unanswered runs to complete a walk-off victory against Hampton on Friday afternoon.
Madison Taylor pitched five innings and allowed six runs. However, only five of those runs were earned. Violet Marta entered the game in relief and pitched two innings, holding the Pirates hitless and striking out a batter. Marta earned her second victory of the season.
The Dragons finished the game with 11 hits. Three different Dragons had multi-hit games. Annabelle Smink went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Macie Bergmann went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. Marta turned in a 2-for-4 performance with a pair of singles.
Hampton began the game, scoring four runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded with two outs, Drexel seemingly escaped the inning with Hampton only scoring one run. However, a pitch timer violation walked in a run and allowed Hampton to score twice more.
Drexel's bats were quiet until the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, a ball that Hampton thought hit the batter and got away from the catcher. Smink scored from third while Devyn Demchak took advantage of the uncovered plate and scored Drexel's second run.
In the fifth inning, Hampton added two runs to extend the visitor's lead back to four. But the lead did not hold long. Demchak singled down the left field line and scored Zoe Krizan and Kelsie Peters on the play.
Drexel's offense continued in the bottom of the sixth inning, after Bergmann hit a double down the left field line. The home run was Bergmann's first of the year.
In the bottom of the seventh, Drexel received a double to right center to tie the game at six. Demchak scored on the play. A batter later, Marta singled up the middle and scored Smink to defeat the Pirates, 7-6.
Drexel returns to the field on Saturday afternoon at noon for game two of the three-game series.
