PHILADELPHIA – Towson scored four goals in a span of 2:17 to break a 7-7 tie as the Tigers defeated Drexel, 12-8, at Vidas Field in a Coastal Athletics Association game. Towson improved to 3-0 in CAA play, while the Dragons are now 1-2
The two teams played even for most of the contest. Drexel (4-6) led by two on three occasions and the Tigers (4-5) didn't lead by more than two until late in the game. Towson held a 7-5 lead late into the third period, but Drexel answered to even it at 7-7. Liam Kammar scored in transition with 3:52 to play in the third. Drexel tied it up when Jack Joyner fired a shot from the right side after a dodge in the opening minute of the final period. That would be the Dragons' last goal until the closing minutes. Chuck Matusek scored twice in a span of 39 seconds to put the Tigers ahead 9-7. Mikey Weisshaar then scored two of his own in a span of just eight seconds as the Tigers pulled away for the win.
Towson got on the board first when Weisshaar had the first of his six goals on the afternoon. Drexel countered with three straight goals, all by senior Max Semple. He evened the score in front off a nice feed from Witt Crawford. Semple then gave DU the lead after a collision where he held his ground and rifled a shot in the upper left corner. Semple then completed the hat trick when he picked up a rebound and scored for the third time in the first stanza.
Weisshaar and Crawford exchanged goals as Drexel still head a two-goal lead. That advantage would dissipate before the half, when Chop Gallagher and Matusek each scored for the Tigers as the teams went to intermission tied at four.
Semple added an assist to finish the day with four points. Crawford had a pair of goals to go along with and assist. Brendan Donnelly made 10 saves, including a number from right on the doorstep. Pat Lyman had a career-high six ground balls for the Dragons. Drexel's man-down defense had its best game of the year. Towson was held without a goal on five attempts, which included a two-minute unreleasable man-up situation as well as a two-man advantage.
Weisshaar picked up an assist to finish with seven points. Matusek scored four and handed out an assist for five points. Towson won 15 of the 24 face offs in the game and outshot Drexel, 41-31.
The Dragons are back at Vidas Field on Saturday when Hampton visits Philadelphia for a CAA game at noon.
