PHILADELPHIA - Allison Drake had a perfect day in the Dragons 16-9 win over Siena at Vidas Field Saturday afternoon. The graduate student collected a career-high seven goals, and was perfect shooting going 7-7. Drexel (5-2) have now won four straight heading into conference play next Friday.
Drexel found themselves in a hole early in the first quarter. The Saints came out the gates fast, scoring four straight to open the game. Grace Dobrzynski earned a pair of goals in that span. Siena held the Dragons scoreless until the 4:26 mark. Drexel scored only once in the quarter, with Drake getting her first of the game. Siena fouled Drake as she raced to the cage with just one second left on the shot clock. Drake took advantage of the free position shot and buried it to get on the board.
Drake opened the second quarter with two more goals to pick up the hat trick. The Easton, Pa. native shot at the 14:02 mark was stopped by Siena's goalie Shalyin Romero, but managed to bounce in for the tally. She then scored under a minute later with another free position goal to bring DU to within one.
Siena extended the lead back to two, before the Dragons held the Saints scoreless for 18 minutes. The Dragons went on a 7-0 run between the second and third quarters. Drexel closed the half with four straight. Four different Dragons scored in that time, with Drake, Kate Marona, Bridget Finley, and Caroline Senich all hitting the back of the net. Katie Maloney earned her first career assist. She picked up the ground ball and sprinted down the field. She found Finley and fought around the defender for the score.
DU kept the momentum going into the third. Bea Buckley found Kate Quinn just over a minute into the quarter. Gragnani added a pair to cap off the streak for Drexel. Finley and Drake each added another to give Drexel a 12-7 lead after three.
Quinn and Finely both tallied in the first two minutes of the fourth to push the lead to seven. Both teams traded goals, with Drexel taking the win, 16-9.
Drexel was 6-9 on eight meters in the game. They also had 35 shots, which was three shy of a season-high. Jenika Cuocco recorded a season-high ten saves. Mary Claire Heubeck also picked up nine draw controls of the bench.
The Dragons begin CAA play on Friday against William & Mary at 1 p.m.
