PHILADELPHIA - The No. 23/25 Drexel women's lacrosse team collected their tenth straight victory Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field, outlasting Hofstra, 11-10. A seven goal run helped the Dragons (11-2, 6-0) climb back from a two goal deficit in the third quarter. Drexel held on after the Pride scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to stay perfect in the CAA.
Mary Claire Heubeck started things off for DU, scoring her fourth goal of the season thanks to the dish from Bea Buckley. Nikka Mennella collected her first of five tallies to tie things up at one. The Dragons out shot the Pride in the first quarter, 10-4.
Hofstra held Drexel to just two goals in the first half, the lowest total for Drexel this season.. The Pride took their first lead of the game at the 13:15 mark. Mennella found Kate Lemery who came sprinting in front of the cage for the goal. Kayleigh Bender collected another for Hofstra to extend the lead to two. She was able to beat two Dragon defenders and fire it in from the left wing.
The Dragons scored early in the third quarter to even the contest back up at three. Drexel collected the opening draw control and went for the score. Kate Marano was fouled on her attempt, and was able to record the free-position goal. Hofstra quickly put together a pair of goals in two minutes to take back a two score lead.
Drexel put together a seven score run midway through the third quarter, with five different Dragons recording goals. Buckley and Teagan Quinn each knocked in a pair of scores as Drexel took a commanding 10-5 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Each team swapped a pair of scores before the Pride made their comeback. Hofstra put together two quick tallies from Bender and Mennella in less than a minute. With three minutes on the clock, Mennella set up Kristen Redding on the run. She came from the right side just in front of the cage and fired into the right upper corner of the net. Mennella scored her game-high seventh point of the day with just 13 seconds left. With three Dragons around her, she made a diving shot to bring the Pride to within one. Hofstra would come one goal shy, as Camryn Ryan picked up the draw control to secure the win for the Dragons.
Drexel will head to Long Island for a pivotal match up against Stony Brook on Friday, April 18 at 6 p.m.
