STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Dragons (11-3, 6-1) second half comeback fell short as Drexel's ten game winning streak came to an end against Stony Brook, 16-9.
This was the longest winning streak in a single season, and one shy of the program record over multiple seasons. Bea Buckley finished with nine points on three goals and three assists, one shy of a career-best. With the win, the Seawolves secure the CAA regular season title and will host the CAA Championships.
Stony Brook got out the gates with an early 5-2 advantage in the first quarter. Riley McDonald collected four of her seven points in the first quarter, including three tallies. McDonald scored just 40 seconds into the contest, knocking her 45th of the season. Charlotte Wilmoth followed soon with another goal. McDonald came rushing down field and dished it out to Wilmoth for the score.
Bridget Finley got the Dragons on the board at the 10:42 mark. The Dragons defense forced a turnover, with Finley picking up the loose ball and going right down field to connect the goal. Buckley and McDonald each hit the back of the net before the Seawolves went on a run.
Stony Brook scored the next seven of eight goals scored in the contest in a nearly ten minute span. Five different Seawolves tallied to expand the lead to 11-3. McDonald found the back of the cage three times during that period. Drexel responded with three straight of their own. Mary Claire Heubeck got things started, capitalizing off the free position attempt. Kate Quinn found Bridget Finley 20 seconds later to cut the lead to six. Quinn fought for space in front of the net, circled back as Finley rushed from the top of the center hash mark for the goal. Teagan Quinn joined her sister to get her sixth goal in her freshman campaign. Wilmoth ended the momentum of the Dragons with back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 13-6 at the half.
Both teams struck for three goals apiece in the third quarter. Buckley fired a shot on goal to earn her third straight hat trick and the fourth on the year. Entering Friday's game, the sophomore was just 3-15 on free-position attempts. Stony Brook put together three quick scores in under three minutes to extend the lead to nine.
The Dragons began their comeback in the late stages of the third, scoring five straight in seven minutes of play. Buckley was able to draw in the Seawolves defenders and connect with Ellie Wall for her first of the game to start the run. Allison Drake picked up her first goal of the night with 51 seconds left in the period. She fought through traffic and got it past the goalkeeper.
Drexel stayed hot going into the fourth. The Easton, Pa. native tallied for two more as Caroline Senich scored another to bring the deficit back to four. Stony Brook finally ended the run as Courtney MaClay came down the alley and fired in a shot. With just under two minutes left, Drake hit the bottom of the net for her 40th goal of the year. The graduated student recorded all four of her goals in the final 16 minutes.
The comeback was not enough as Drexel fell to Stony Brook. This was Drexel's first loss since February 16. The Dragons were able to hold the Seawolves to just four goals in the second half. Huebeck finished with a career high eight draw controls on the night, with Camryn Ryan earning fourth ground balls.
Drexel rounds out the regular season with two games at Vidas Field. The Dragons face across town rival Temple on Wednesday, April 23 at 3 p.m. in University City.
