PHILADELPHIA – A seventh inning rally was not enough to propel the Drexel softball team past the Saint Joseph's Hawks on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks scored nine runs and held Drexel to seven at Drexel's Softball Field.
Madison Taylor started in the circle for Drexel and pitched a complete game, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs.
Devyn Demchak and Lana Mooney each checked in with three hits apiece. Mooney scored two runs, while Demchak scored a run and tallied three RBIs. Mia Garza hit 2-for-3 and was responsible for three RBIs and three runs scored.
SJU began the scoring in the first inning. Hailey Malito hit a solo home run to left field to give the visitors an early advantage.
In the bottom half of the inning, Mia Garza cleared the bases after hitting a three-run home run to right center. The home run was Garza's third of the season.
The Hawks answered in the second with a pair of runs to tie the game at three. A solo home run pulled Saint Joseph's within one. An RBI single a few batters later knotted the game at three. The Hawks extended their lead to seven in the third inning. A double down the line scored the go-ahead run. SJU scored the rest of the runs during the inning on an fielding error, sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
In the bottom of the third, Drexel pulled within two of the Hawks. Demchak hit an RBI single to left field and scored Mooney on the play. A batter later, Kylah Reading singled through the left side and scored Garza on the play.
Saint Joseph's scored two insurance runs in the seventh inning. The first run was scored by way of a home run to center field, while the second run was scored after Saint Joseph's stole second base on a first-and-third situation and scored on the throw to second.
In the bottom of the seventh, Demchak hit a home run to left center and scored Garza to pull Drexel within two. The home run was Demchak's second of the season. Drexel managed to put a runner on first after the home run, but the Dragons were retired in order to end the game.
