PHILADELPHIA – A pair of first half tallies propelled the men's soccer team past the Northeastern Huskies, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. The Dragons picked up their first victory of the season and first conference win of the season, improving their record to 1-1-1.
Drexel put on a defensive clinic in the 90-minute contest, only allowing two shots on target. On the other end of the field, the Drexel offense peppered the Huskies goalkeeper, placing four on target and taking a total of 13 shots.
In the 23rd minute of the game, Tiago Lima-Bittencourt took the ball to baseline of the Huskies side of the pitch and crossed the ball into the box. The cross beat all the defenders and Will Starker finished the play to score Drexel's first goal.
The Dragons struck again in the 27th minute of the game. Julian Pittaoulis played a ball onto the top of the 16-yard box. After the ball took a deflection off a Northeastern player, Lima-Bittencourt took a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced into the net.
Northeastern drew a straight red card in the 41st minute of the game and had to play the rest of the match a man down. However, in the 45th minute of the game, Northeastern's Morris Matthews took a shot from outside the 16-yard box and replicated Drexel's second goal, hitting the crossbar and bouncing into the Drexel net.
The second half was calm for both teams, not resulting in a goal for either end. Drexel took seven shots and did not put any on target, while Northeastern took two shots and only being on target for one.
Drexel returns to action on September 6, when it welcomes Monmouth to Vidas Field. Action is set for 1 p.m.
