PHILADELPHIA — The Quakers scored twice in the final 3:21 of play to escape with a win over the Dragons Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field. The back-and-forth contest featured eight lead changes and seven ties throughout the afternoon.
Bea Buckley paced the Dragons with four points, including a go-ahead goal at the 5:12 mark that briefly put Drexel in front late in the fourth quarter. With the loss, Drexel falls to 2-1 on the young season.
Penn opened the scoring early in the first quarter, converting on a free-position attempt to take the initial lead of the day. The Dragons quickly answered with three straight goals in a 1:24 span. Freshman Annie Madden netted a pair, while Mary Claire Heubeck added another to give Drexel a 3-1 advantage.
The Quakers responded with three consecutive netters of their own, with Kate Stanton, Patricia Columbia-Wash and Olivia Nicoll all hitting the back of the net. Buckley answered with the equalizer off the free-position to tie things up at four after the first.
Penn opened the second quarter capitalizing on a Drexel mistake. The Dragons forced a turnover behind their own net but immediately gave it back to the Quakers, leading to a quick goal. Drexel tied things back up at five apiece nearly two minutes later. Huebeck tossed it up to Teagan Quinn who put it away for her first of the year. Caroline Senich and Katherine Senich followed with back-to-back free-potion goals as DU took the 7-5 lead at the half.
Buckley added another goal to start the third, receiving the dish from Kate Quinn just 42 seconds into the quarter. Penn closed the quarter on a three goal streak to tie it up at eight.
Buckley once again delivered the go-ahead goal to put the Dragons back in front. The junior sliced through the middle and dove across the middle for the score. Penn answered nearly four minutes later, as Regan O'Brien buried a shot into the bottom-right corner to even the score.
Buckley struck again with a turnaround shot, firing it through with 5:12 remaining to give Drexel a 10-9 lead. O'Brien responded from the right side to knot the game at 10-10. Lela Greene then went coast-to-coast, weaving through traffic before finding the back of the net to secure the win for the Quakers, 11-10.
