Dragons Split on Opening Day of UWG Opening Weekend

How It Happened - Game one
Drexel struck first in the opening inning. Kylah Reading reached and moved into scoring position, and the Dragons pushed across an unearned run on a Kalea Calugay RBI single to center to take a 1–0 lead.
Bellarmine answered in the third, using a solo home run and an RBI single to move in front, 2–1. Drexel responded immediately in the bottom half. Reading opened the inning with a single, Jackie Masone doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and Nicole Alldred drove in the tying run with an RBI single. Drexel then regained the lead on a Mckenna Rowlands RBI groundout to make it 3–2.
The Dragons added to the margin in the fourth and fifth innings. Annabelle Smink homered to left in the fourth, and Drexel capitalized on an error later in the inning to extend the lead. In the fifth, Smink connected again with a two-run home run, and the Dragons tacked on another run to carry an 8–2 advantage into the sixth.
Bellarmine mounted a comeback in the sixth, scoring seven runs to take a 9–8 lead. Drexel answered in the bottom half, manufacturing two runs to regain the lead. Masone singled to start the inning and moved up on a wild pitch, and the Dragons tied the game on a run that scored during a defensive miscue. Moments later, Drexel took the lead for good when the go-ahead run crossed the plate on a fielder's choice, putting the Dragons in front 10–9. Bellarmine threatened in the seventh, but Drexel held on to close out the win.
How it Happened - Game Two
Georgia State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, pushing a run across to take a 1–0 lead.
Drexel answered in the top of the fourth. Alldred doubled to right field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Devyn Demchak. Rowlands followed with a single, then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Smink doubled to left-center to drive in both Alldred and Rowlands and tie the game, 2–2.
Georgia State responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, then added two more in the fifth. The Panthers broke the game open with five runs in the sixth to close out the 11–2 final.
By the Numbers
- Annabelle Smink went 3-for-6 on the day with two home runs and five RBI, including a three-RBI effort in the opener and a two-RBI double against Georgia State.
- Kylah Reading finished 3-for-7 across the two games and scored twice in the win over Bellarmine.
- Jackie Masone recorded a multi-hit game in the opener and crossed the plate twice.
