PHILADELPHIA — Alec Tulio and Conor Hooley combined for eight points as the Dragons opened CAA play with a 12-8 win over Monmouth Saturday afternoon. Brendan Donnelly had a big day for Drexel, collecting ten saves as DU improves to 5-3 on the season.
The first half was a defensive battle between the two squads. The Hawks opened the scoring nearly a minute into the contest with a goal from Ryan O'Rourke. Drexel evened things up two minutes later when Jack Joyner finished a feed from Teddy Luthy.
The next goal didn't come until the 13-minute mark of the second half, when the Dragons struck back-to-back. Following a Monmouth save, Witt Crawford intercepted the pass from the keeper in front of the cage and quickly put it away to give Drexel the lead. The Hawks answered shortly after, converting on a man-up opportunity to even the score at two.
The Dragons responded with a six-goal run that stretched into the third quarter. As the shot clock expired, Lincoln Wall fired a shot while falling to the ground and connected for the goal. The Dragons never relinquished the lead again, with Crawford and Liam Kammar adding two more goals in a span of 1:08.
Crawford picked up his fourth hat trick of the season as Wall found the Alexandria, Va., native on a behind-the-back pass for the finish. The Dragons closed the quarter with another goal with just 13 seconds left on the clock, as Hooley found Liam Luzza for the one-timer to take a 7–2 advantage into halftime. Drexel finished the run with the first goal of the third quarter, as Alec Tulio earned his first of four goals on the day.
The Hawks fought their way back into the game, scoring three straight to cut the lead to three. Bradley Wyckoff started the run with a pair of goals, ending an almost 17-minute scoring drought. Monmouth added another before a flurry of three goals in the final 46 seconds of the quarter, with Drexel scoring twice ten seconds apart before the Hawks added the final goal at the 12 second mark.
Both teams traded two goals apiece to close out the contest. Tulio capped off a three-goal streak for Drexel as the Dragons held off Monmouth 12–8.
