Fourth Quarter Offense Lifts Drexel Past Fairfield, 13-11

PHIALDELPHIA – The Drexel men's lacrosse team defeated the Fairfield Stags, 13-11 at Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Fairfield falls to 1-1 in CAA Play and 4-5 overall.
Trent Layton was the primary faceoff guy for Drexel in Saturday's contest and nearly won half of his attempts, totaling 13 of 28.
Brendan Donnelly started in the cage for Drexel and totaled 12 saves.
Three Dragons had hat tricks in the contest. Connor Hooley and Teddy Luthy each scored three goals, while Witt Crawford also tacked on three assists, to total a six-point performance.
After falling 2-0 quickly in the first quarter, Drexel stormed back to take the lead. The Dragons rallied off back-to-back goals beginning at 8:19 and 8:13 to tie the game at two. Hooley scored Drexel's first goal of the quarter, then off the faceoff win, Layton dumped the ball off to Crawford, who buried the shot to tie the game.
Drexel took the lead on a Gavin Kelly play that originated from midfield. Kelly beat a defender on his way to the goal and gave Drexel its first lead of the game. Fairfield tied the game at three 2:30 left, but Drexel regained the lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Alec Tulio and Crawford converted an extra-man opportunity with 2:17 remaining, while Layton took a face-off victory to the house and scored Drexel's fifth goal of the quarter.
Fairfield rattled off a pair of goals to begin the second quarter, tying the game at five. With 4:31 remaining in the half, Drexel regained the lead, receiving an unassisted tally from Luke Carden. Drexel held the lead going into the locker room for halftime.
In the second half, Fairfield tied the game in the first forty seconds. However, Drexel responded with a goal by Teddy Luthy with 13:06 remaining. Fairfield scored two unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead into the closing minutes of the third quarter. With 2:32 remaining in the quarter, Hooley and Crawford paired for an equalizer. A little over a minute later, Hooley and Tulio gave Drexel the lead.
The fourth quarter continued the back-and-forth affair. Fairfield scored on an extra man opportunity in the first minute of the frame, then scored once more to take the lead with 13:19 remaining.
The game of runs continued as Drexel scored another pair of goals to regain the lead, both from Crawford. With 12:41 remaining, Crawford finished a play started by Caden Zadell to tie the game at 10. Four minutes later, Jack Joyner dished Crawford a pass, to which Crawford buried into the net to give Drexel a lead.
The Dragons took a two-goal lead with 4:26 remaining after Luthy and Crawford paired up for the first time of the game. Drexel iced the game with an extra-man goal by Teddy Luthy with 22 seconds remaining. Fairfield managed to score a goal in the waning seconds of the game but could not erase the three-goal deficit.
Drexel prepares for one of its toughest games of the season on the road against No. 20 Towson on Saturday, March 28. The Dragons and Tigers are set for a 3 p.m. face off on FloCollege.
