Drexel Tops UMES 11-2 Friday Afternoon

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel softball moved to 7-6 with an 11-2 win in five innings over Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday afternoon at Penn Park.
How It Happened
UMES scored first in the top of the second, using two singles and a bases-loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead.
Drexel responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Devyn Demchak and Annabelle Smink opened the frame with walks before Quinn Cunnigham singled to load the bases. Olivia Sciulli drew a walk to bring in the tying run, and Kylah Reading followed with another bases-loaded walk to put the Dragons ahead. Kalea Calugay then singled to right field, driving in two runs. Later in the inning, Kelsie Peters hit a three-run home run to deep left field to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Dragons added four more runs in the third inning. Macie Bergmann walked and Cunnigham and Sciulli followed with singles to load the bases. Reading then hit a grand slam to deep center field, pushing the Drexel advantage to 11-1.
UMES scored once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 11-2.
By the Numbers
Kylah Reading finished 1-for-2 with a home run, five RBI, a run scored, and a walk.
Kelsie Peters went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a run scored.
Kalea Calugay recorded three hits and two RBI.
Quinn Cunnigham went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Courtney Kols earned the win, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Drexel totaled eight hits and drew six walks.

Drexel returns to Penn Park on Saturday, March 7 for a doubleheader against UMES beginning at 12 p.m., with game two scheduled for 2 p.m.
