Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel freshman Kyle Bergman had a career-high five points as the Dragons scored the first two goals of the game and never looked back in an 8-4 win at Saint Joseph's. The Dragons broke open a close game with five straight goals to start the second half as they improved to 2-3 on the season. Saint Joseph's fell to 2-4.
With the Dragons ahead 3-1 at the start of the third period, the Drexel offense came to life. Scott Perri, Kevin Stockel and Kyle Bergman scored third quarter goals to increase Drexel's lead to 6-1. The fourth quarter started out the same as Jon Van Houten and Perri each scored goals to make it an 8-1 game with 10:22 remaining in the game. The Hawks stopped the run and made the final score 8-4 with three goals in the final 4:46 of the game.
Drexel's Greg Casey took a feed from Kyle Bergman just over six minutes into the game to put the Dragons on the board. It would be the only goal of the first quarter. In the second, Bergman set up Adam Dennis to make it a two-goal cushion. The Hawks cut it to 2-1 when Ian Kelly scored midway through the first period, but that was as close as it would get. Bergman picked up his third assist of the game when he set up Perri with just over three minutes to play to put the Dragons up 3-1 heading into halftime.
Bergman handed out four assists in the game. The rookie now has 14 points in the Dragons five games, which leads the team. Perri had his first hat trick of the season, while both Dennis and Casey finished with a goal and an assist. Drexel goalkeeper Mark Manos, this week's CAA Rookie of the Week, had another solid start in the cage, making 10 saves and allowing just one goal before being replaced in the fourth quarter by Andy Lamb. The Drexel face-off unit was 11-for 16. Zak Fisher was 6-for-8, while Nick Kusturiss won four of his five attempts.
Sean Evans led the Hawks with three goals. Goalkeeper Erik Hotaling made six saves for the Hawks
The Dragons return home on Saturday afternoon, when Albany visits Vidas Field. The Great Danes are now 3-1 after defeating No. 13 UMass on Tuesday in Amherst, 12-9.
