Lawson's Seven Points Leads Dragons to 13-9 Season Opening Win over Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. - The Dragons opened the 2010 season with a 13-9 victory at Virginia Tech as senior Katie Lawson contributed five goals and two assists. Drexel broke an 8-8 tie with 20 minutes remaining with five of the final six goals of the game. The Hokies were led by Jessica Nonn who scored three goals while Shannon Bone totaled two goals and an assist.
Nonn's third goal tied the game at 8-8 with 20:22 remaining in the game but Krista Gerstenberger responded just 71 seconds later with an unassisted score to give Drexel the lead. Mariana Uribe scored five minutes later on a pass from Lawson before she scored a goal of her own with 8:46 left to give Drexel an 11-8 edge. Sam Berger and Charlotte Wood sealed the game with each scoring a goal to give Drexel its biggest lead of the day at 13-8. Virginia Tech's Allie Emala capped the game's scoring with a goal with 3:53 left.
The Dragons opened the game with two quick goals as Charlotte Wood tallied the season's first goal on a free-position shot just 1:44 into the game before Lawson got her first score less than three minutes into the game. The Hokies took their only lead of the game as they reeled off three straight goals in a span of 123 seconds. Lindsey Kovar scored her first career goal to halt the run while Wood followed to give Drexel the lead. Kovar wasted little time adding her second career goal as she scored with 9:36 remaining in the first half. Lawson scored just 24 seconds later to give Drexel a 6-3 lead. The Hokies cut into the lead with two straight goals before Lawson notched her third goal of the half with 39 seconds remaining in the period as she gave the Dragons' a 7-5 lead at the break. The teams traded goals to open the second half before Nonn scored two straight goals to set up the 8-8 tie with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Whitney Johnson made nine saves in the cage in picking up her first career victory. Virginia Tech outshot Drexel, 31-26, and grabbed 20 groundballs to the Dragons' 10. Allen totaled a team-high three groundballs for Drexel.
The Dragons return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face American at 3:00 p.m.
