Philadelphia - Drexel men's soccer, off to it's best start since 2007, will enter CAA competition this weekend against the Tribe of William & Mary. The Dragons are 4-1-1 after a weekend in Florida at the FGCU Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. The Tribe, fresh off a 1-0 defeat by Old Dominion in its CAA opener earlier in the week, are 4-2 on the season and ranked No. 28 in the latest College Soccer News poll.
William & Mary leads the all-time series between the two teams, 9-1. In their last meeting, Drexel fell in a 3-1 battle to the Tribe on senior night at Vidas Field. Freshman Nathan Page tied the match for Drexel in the 28th minute after Price Thomas put the Tribe on top early in the eight minute of action. Drexel allowed two late goals with less than 15 minutes in regulation to drop the decision.
Drexel's last match pitted the Dragons against their first nationally ranked opponent this season, No. 24 South Florida. The Bulls took down the Dragons, 1-0, in a hard fought match that saw 27 infractions and six cards, three yellow and three red. Drexel freshman defender Tal Bubli and senior striker Nate Baker received All-Tournament honors on the weekend. Senior captain Anthony Bafile scored for the Dragons as they tied their match against Florida Golf Coast earlier in the Classic. Bafile brings two goals and an assist into CAA play.
William & Mary is looking to rebound and break even in conference play as the Monarchs from Old Dominion took down the Tribe in both teams' conference opener. Jordan LeBlanc's goal for Old Dominion set up by Chris Harmon in the 24th minute proved to be the only mark of the match and consequent game-winner. William & Mary's Ryan Snyder has combined four goals and one assist into a team-leading nine points this season.
Drexel looks to roll its success into conference play before breaking to visit Bucknell followed by two home matches in early October.
