Philadelphia - California edged Drexel, 9-8, in a tightly contested women's lacrosse game. Drexel scored three of the last four goals of the game in a furious rally. But the Golden Bears won the final face off after a Drexel goal with 1:32 to play and were able to run out the clock and hold on for the victory. The Dragons (5-2) outshot the Golden Bears (6-4) 23-17 and finished with 12 draw controls to California's 7. Drexel is now 3-1 at Vidas Field.
Sophomore Kelli Joran led the Dragons for the second straight game with three goals, while teammate Alyse Maiden led the team with two assists. Joran now has 13 goals on the season. Drexel's Emily Kane and Amanda Norcini both led the team in draw controls.
Junior Jaclyn Klunder scored in the opening seconds of the game to give the Dragons an early lead. California's Melissa Humphrey scored three quick goals to give the Golden Bears a 3-1 lead. Kelli Joran scored a pair of goals to tie the game, 3-3. Junior Charlotte Wood and sophomore Kristen Kopenhaver's free position goals put Drexel ahead by one, 5-4, at the end of the first half.
The Golden Bears started a 4-0 run after a quick score by California's Melissa Humphrey. Drexel's Emily Kane scored with just under two minutes remaining in the second half and looked to create momentum for the Dragons. California held possession and the one point lead until the time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Whitney Johnson recorded three saves in 34:09 minutes, while freshman Amanda Santandrea made a save in the final 25:51 minutes of the game. Johnson now has 34 saves on the season.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. against Saint Mary's (Calif.) at Vidas Field.
